In the complex and often confusing world of personal development, few qualities are as sought after and celebrated as confidence. This desired trait, often seen as the cornerstone of success, is not merely about presenting a façade of assurance or competence. True confidence runs deeper, encompassing a fundamental belief in one’s abilities, qualities, and potential.

However, understanding confidence requires us to navigate its complexities, recognizing what it is and what it decidedly is not. This article probes into the multilayered nature of confidence, exploring its limits, its distinction from arrogance, and the ways in which we can cultivate it authentically.

This post is longer than my usual preference, extending an extra 600 words, but the depth of the topic on confidence deserved it. Exploring the nuances of building and maintaining confidence required more space to cover the journey and insights thoroughly. Each additional word adds value, offering a comprehensive look into overcoming insecurities and fostering self-belief, making the extra length not just necessary but enriching for the discussion.

Understanding Confidence

At its core, confidence is about trust—trust in oneself. It’s the internal certainty that you can handle what comes your way, make informed decisions, and put forth your best effort regardless of the outcome. 

Yet, it’s crucial to acknowledge that confidence is not a blanket state that applies uniformly across all aspects of life. A person might exude confidence in one area while grappling with insecurities in another.

Contrary to popular belief, confidence is not a fixed state of being that some have and some don’t. It’s not a label reserved for certain individuals or tied exclusively to extroversion. Instead, it’s a dynamic skill that can be honed and developed over time, just like a muscle. Just like any other skill, confidence emerges from mastering various aspects of our lives.


Misconceptions about confidence are widespread, often fueled by societal stereotypes and assumptions. Let’s first debunk some of these misconceptions.

Misconception 1: Extroverts Are Naturally More Confident

The misconception that extroverts are naturally more confident stems from a superficial understanding of what confidence truly is. Confidence, at its core, is an internal sense of belief in one’s own abilities, qualities, and judgment. It’s not merely about how outwardly expressive or sociable one appears. Introverts, often perceived as quieter or more reserved, can possess deep-seated confidence, particularly in areas where they feel most knowledgeable or passionate.

Introverted confidence might not always manifest through loud or assertive expressions but can be observed in the calm assurance with which they present their ideas, the depth of their writing, or their ease in navigating small group interactions or one-on-one conversations. Their confidence is rooted in a strong sense of self-awareness and an understanding of their strengths and limitations.

Furthermore, introverts often engage in reflective practices that bolster their confidence. They may spend time thinking through scenarios thoroughly before acting, ensuring that when they do speak up or take action, it’s with a level of confidence that comes from careful consideration.

In essence, confidence is a multifaceted trait that transcends personality types. Both extroverts and introverts can be equally confident, albeit in different ways. Recognizing and valuing the diverse expressions of confidence is crucial in appreciating the unique strengths that each individual brings to the table.

Misconception 2: Attractive People Are Automatically Confident

Physical attractiveness is often seen as a shortcut to confidence. While societal validation can boost self-esteem (temporarily), true confidence is more than skin deep. It stems from within and radiates outwards, making you feel comfortable and secure in your own skin. It’s not just about looking good, it’s about feeling good too.  

It involves self-acceptance and recognizing one’s worth beyond physical looks. Moreover, conventionally attractive people can struggle with insecurity and self-doubt just like anyone else.

Misconception 3: Wealth and Fame Guarantee Confidence

Wealth and fame can provide access to opportunities and luxuries, but they don’t inherently solve the internal struggles related to self-worth and confidence. In fact, the pressures and scrutiny that come with wealth and fame can exacerbate feelings of insecurity. That’s why some celebrities go to therapy or invest in confidence coaches—to navigate the unique challenges of their positions and develop a grounded sense of self-assurance.

Misconception 4: Confident People Never Feel Nervous or Insecure

This is perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions about confidence. Confidence doesn’t mean the absence of fear, nervousness, or insecurity; it means having the courage to face these feelings and act despite them. Even the most confident individuals experience moments of doubt and anxiety, especially when stepping out of their comfort zones or facing new challenges. The difference is in how they manage these feelings and push forward.

Arrogance VS Confidence

Arrogance and confidence are not the same things, in fact, they are quite the opposite. While confidence is an assurance in one’s abilities, arrogance is characterized by an overinflated sense of one’s abilities, which often leads to a disregard for others. Arrogance can be a result of deep-seated insecurities that are overcompensated through dominance and arrogance.

In contrast, confidence is grounded in a realistic appraisal of one’s skills and achievements. Confident individuals are aware of their strengths and limitations and can navigate both with grace and humility.

To illustrate the difference between arrogance and confidence through behavior and personality, let’s consider two hypothetical individuals: Jamie, who embodies arrogance, and Jordan, who represents confidence.

Example of Arrogant Behavior and Person: Jamie

Behavior: Jamie often dominates conversations, rarely listening to others’ opinions or acknowledging them as valuable. They tend to boast about their achievements, exaggerating their importance and minimizing or ignoring their failures. In team settings, Jamie insists that their way is the only correct approach, dismissing others’ suggestions without consideration.

Personality Traits: Jamie exhibits a sense of superiority, believing they are inherently better than others, whether in skills, intelligence, or social status. This belief is often unfounded or exaggerated. They have a hard time admitting when they are wrong and may blame others for their own mistakes. Jamie’s interactions are marked by a lack of empathy and a failure to recognize or value the contributions of others.

Example of Confident Behavior and Person: Jordan

Behavior: Jordan approaches situations with a calm assurance, grounded in a realistic understanding of their abilities. They are open to feedback and willing to acknowledge their mistakes, viewing them as opportunities for growth. Jordan listens to others, values their input, and is comfortable sharing the spotlight. They offer support and encouragement to those around them, fostering a collaborative environment. 

Personality Traits: Jordan is self-aware, recognizing their strengths and areas for improvement. They maintain a positive outlook, driven by the belief in their ability to overcome challenges through effort and learning. Jordan’s confidence does not come at the expense of others; instead, they uplift those around them, demonstrating that true confidence is inclusive and empathetic. 

Key Differences: 
  • Jamie’s arrogance is based on an inflated perception of self-worth that seeks validation through belittling others or dismissing their contributions.
  • Jordan’s confidence is rooted in self-awareness and an accurate assessment of their capabilities. 
Impact on Others:
  • Jamie’s behavior tends to alienate others, creating an environment of competition and resentment. 
  • In contrast, Jordan’s confident demeanor encourages cooperation and mutual respect among peers.
Adaptability and Growth:
  • Arrogance, as seen in Jamie, is rigid and resistant to feedback, limiting personal growth. It is fueled by deep-rooted insecurities and jealousy of others. 
  • Confidence, exemplified by Jordan, is adaptable and open to learning, which fosters continuous improvement and resilience.

Through these examples, we see how arrogance and confidence manifest differently in behavior and personality traits. Arrogance pushes others away and hinders personal growth, while confidence builds bridges and encourages development.

Self-Mastery and Confidence:

The key to building confidence lies in the concept of self-mastery. When we take the initiative to learn new skills, embrace hobbies, and embark on adventures that push our boundaries, we pave the way for confidence to blossom. Each mastered skill becomes a building block, contributing to the foundation of our confidence. It’s a journey of continuous growth and self-discovery.

Self-mastery and confidence are closely intertwined, as the journey towards mastering oneself inherently cultivates a deeper sense of confidence. This journey involves understanding and controlling one’s emotions, behaviors, and thoughts, leading to a profound sense of empowerment and self-assuredness. The adage “practice makes perfect” is particularly relevant here, emphasizing the importance of consistent effort and perseverance in developing both self-mastery and confidence.

Through repeated practice, individuals not only refine their skills and abilities but also build resilience against failure and rejection. This process fosters a growth mindset, where challenges are viewed as opportunities to learn and improve, rather than insurmountable obstacles. For example, a public speaker might start with a fear of speaking in front of crowds but, through deliberate practice and exposure, can transform this fear into a strength, becoming more poised and articulate over time.

My journey from self-doubt to empowerment has been a profound transformation. As the old me, I excelled in managing a household and juggling the demands of three kids and a partner. Despite my skills, I often felt unappreciated and unworthy, my confidence locked within the walls of my home.

Embracing courage—moving forward despite fear—I ventured into new territory. I started building a business from scratch, channeling my passions and asserting my needs. This wasn’t just about professional growth; it was a journey of self-discovery.

Starting a business is fraught with uncertainties. Each decision, challenge, and victory has been a step towards building my confidence. Am I super confident now? Not entirely. But I am definitely more confident than I was yesterday, a year ago, and especially more than five years ago.

My story is a testament to the power of courage and the continuous journey of confidence. It’s about believing in myself, even when the path ahead is unclear. Every day, I’m not just nurturing my business; I’m nurturing my self-worth and embracing my potential.


The “Wonder Woman stance” is like standing like a superhero—feet apart, hands on your hips, and chin up. Doing this can actually make you feel more confident. 

Studies say that when you stand this way, your body makes more of a hormone that helps you feel brave and less of a hormone that makes you feel stressed. This means you might feel more ready and less worried about things like talking in front of people or going to a job interview. 

Here’s how to do it: Stand up tall, spread your legs to about shoulder-width apart, put your hands on your hips, and lift your chin a bit. Hold this pose for about two minutes before a situation where you need a confidence boost. This simple action can trick your brain into feeling more powerful and calm.

Building and Maintaining Confidence

Building and maintaining confidence is a journey that unfolds every day. It starts with acknowledging the small wins and allowing ourselves to feel proud of them. These moments, no matter how minor they may seem, are the building blocks of a stronger self-belief. Seeking out constructive feedback is also crucial; it offers us perspectives that can help refine our skills and approach, fueling our growth. Moreover, the way we talk to ourselves plays a significant role. Positive self-talk can uplift us, while negative self-talk can easily erode our confidence. Thus, it’s important to be kind and encouraging to ourselves.

Facing challenges head-on is another vital aspect of cultivating confidence. Each challenge is an opportunity to learn and expand our capabilities. Even when we fail, there’s a lesson to be learned, and each lesson brings us closer to the version of ourselves we aspire to be. Lastly, the company we keep can significantly impact our confidence. Surrounding ourselves with people who support and believe in us can make a world of difference. These individuals not only provide encouragement but also remind us of our worth, especially in moments of doubt.

In summary, building confidence is an active, continuous process that involves celebrating our achievements, welcoming feedback, practicing positive self-dialogue, embracing challenges, learning from setbacks, and cherishing our support network. By committing to these practices, we lay the groundwork for a resilient and enduring confidence that can withstand the tests of time and circumstance.

The Spectrum of Confidence

Confidence exists on a spectrum and is not a binary state of being completely confident or insecure. It varies greatly across different aspects of our lives, meaning we can feel confident in some areas while harboring insecurities in others. This understanding highlights that confidence is specific, situational, and reflects our unique experiences and skills. 

Recognizing that even the most confident individuals have their own doubts and vulnerabilities underscores the true nature of confidence—it’s about managing these insecurities with resilience and self-assurance, not about the absence of them. True confidence, then, is the ability to coexist with and navigate through our vulnerabilities and imperfections.

Confidence can vary greatly depending on the situation, showing that it’s possible to feel assured in some areas of life while being less confident in others. Here are brief examples:

  • Writing vs. Video: You might be great at writing but feel nervous speaking on camera. The lack of control over immediate responses can be intimidating compared to the deliberative process of writing.
  • Technical Skills vs. Social Skills: Excelling in a technical job doesn’t always mean feeling comfortable in social settings. Social dynamics are unpredictable, unlike the structured environment of technical work.
  • Artistry vs. Public Speaking: An artist confident in their work might still dread public speaking. Explaining art verbally can be more daunting than creating it.
  • Work vs. Personal Life: Someone could be confident at work but struggle in personal relationships. Professional success doesn’t always translate into personal confidence.
  • Fitness vs. Academics: Being physically fit and confident in one’s athletic abilities doesn’t guarantee feeling smart or academically capable. Different domains, different confidence levels.
  • Confidence with appearance: we might feel good about our face or hair but less so about our butt, legs, or other areas. This mix shows that self-perception is complex, emphasizing the need to cultivate a holistic sense of self-worth that embraces every part of us, even those we’re still learning to accept.

These examples show how confidence isn’t uniform across all areas of life, highlighting the importance of working on our insecurities to build overall self-assurance.

The Dynamics of Confidence

Even the most confident among us face moments of doubt and apprehension. High-stakes situations, (like divorce) unfamiliar challenges, (like a new job or career) or simply bad days can stir feelings of nervousness and anxiety in anyone. These moments do not detract from one’s overall confidence; rather, they are a natural part of the human experience, reminding us that confidence does not equate to invincibility.

Since middle school, I’ve dreamed of writing and publishing books, but for years, insecurities, doubt, and fear kept me from writing anything outside my journal. The idea of putting my work out there felt daunting, and the thought of rejection was paralyzing. Despite these fears, I’ve made significant strides.

Today, I’m not just someone who dreams of writing; I’m an author with my first book published. Beyond that, I’ve contributed three chapters to two anthology books, created a library of ebooks, and I’m already planning my second book. I also maintain an active blog, writing weekly posts and sending out newsletters three times a week to my subscribers. With a slew of ideas for more topics, my journey is just getting started. My confidence in my writing has grown, fueled by practice and the visible progress I’ve made. Although I’m not Stephen King yet, I improve with each day, and my confidence builds alongside my skills. This journey from doubt to determination has taught me that confidence comes with taking steps forward, no matter how small, and embracing the process of growth.

However, when it comes to video content, I find myself struggling. Despite the confidence I’ve gained in my writing, translating that assurance into a visual and auditory format feels like venturing into unfamiliar territory. Speaking in front of a camera brings a new set of insecurities and fears, highlighting the spectrum of confidence I experience across different mediums. It’s a reminder that growth is an ongoing process, and areas untouched by confidence offer new opportunities for learning and development. Just as I overcame my fears in writing, I see this challenge with video content as the next frontier to conquer, applying the same perseverance and determination that has guided me so far.


In reflecting on my journey from a dreamer with a journal to a published author with a growing body of work, it’s clear that confidence is not a fixed attribute but a dynamic force shaped by our actions, challenges, and successes. 

My evolution as a writer, from harboring unpublished ideas to sharing my stories with the world, underscores the transformative power of stepping out of our comfort zones and into our potential. While writing has become a fortress of confidence for me, venturing into video content reminds me that there are always new terrains to explore, each with its own set of fears and opportunities for growth.

This journey teaches us that confidence is built one step at a time, through persistence, practice, and the courage to confront our insecurities head-on. As I navigate the unfamiliar world of video content, I am reminded that the essence of growth lies not in avoiding fear but in embracing it as a catalyst for change. My story is a testament to the fact that with each new challenge we overcome, our confidence expands, preparing us for the next leap into the unknown.
